Walkthrough: Using the Apple Watch app

When your hands are full — holding your person, driving, settling a hard moment — pulling out your phone is the last thing you want to do. CareHaven on your Apple Watch lets you log the small things from your wrist, with a tap you can feel without looking. Available

On this page

Everything you log on the Watch flows back to your iPhone. If your phone is out of reach, the Watch holds onto what you logged and sends it over the moment the two are back together, so nothing is lost.

Before you start

You will need:

  • An Apple Watch paired to the iPhone that has CareHaven on it.
  • CareHaven installed and opened on your iPhone at least once.
  • A CareHaven Plus or Family plan. The Watch app is part of Plus. After you start a plan, close and reopen CareHaven on your iPhone once; the Watch connection switches on the next time CareHaven starts.

Installing the Watch app — iOS installs the CareHaven Watch app automatically when your Watch is paired and CareHaven is on your iPhone. If it didn't appear on its own, open the Watch app on your iPhone, scroll to Available Apps, find CareHaven, and tap Install. Once installed, opening CareHaven on your iPhone sends a fresh snapshot to your wrist.

Opening it on your wrist — press the Digital Crown to go to the app grid (or your watch face), then tap the CareHaven app. The Watch app picks up the color theme you chose on your iPhone, so it will feel familiar.

The pages

These are the pages for everyday logging. Turn the Digital Crown or swipe up and down to move between them.

  • Now — a quick glance at where things stand.
  • Log — one-tap logging and dictation.
  • Next — your next appointment.

1. Check the Now page

The Now page is the first thing you see. It gives you the picture at a glance:

  • Your person's name at the top.
  • The last feeding and how long ago it was (for example, "3 min ago").
  • Today's mood, if you have checked in.
  • Today's running count of feedings and behavior events.
  • The next appointment and when it is, if one is coming up.
  • A small note showing when this was last updated.
  • A small sync line at the top when there is something to say: "N logs syncing" while taps are on their way, or "Sync paused — phone unreachable" when the Watch is holding taps until your iPhone is back in range.
  • A coral No food or drink banner when your iPhone has a fasting window running for your person, so you see it before you tap a feeding. It shows the reason and when the window ends.

If the page looks empty, open CareHaven on your iPhone for a moment. Within a few seconds the Watch fills in with today's snapshot.

2. Log a feeding with one tap

  1. Swipe or turn the Crown to the Log page. At the top it says Logging for and your person's name, with their color dot. Taps on this page file under that person.
  2. Under Feed, tap Bottle or Snack.

That is it. The moment you tap, the Watch gives you a gentle buzz to confirm, and a green checkmark badge appears — "Logged bottle" (or "Logged snack") — then fades after a second or so. The buzz is the point: you can log without ever looking at your wrist.

The feeding lands in today's list on your iPhone a few seconds later. The time stamped on it is the moment you tapped, not the moment it reached your phone, so a feeding you logged while your phone was in the other room still shows the right time.

If the page says Open CareHaven on your iPhone first, Open CareHaven on your iPhone to refresh watch logging, or Update CareHaven on your iPhone to log from your watch, do that. The Watch pauses logging until it knows whose profile to file under, so a tap can never land on the wrong person.

3. Do a regulation check-in from your wrist

A regulation check-in is a quick read of how your person is doing right now, on a calm-to-crisis scale. You can capture it from the Watch without breaking away from the moment.

  1. On the Log page, under Mood, tap one of the mood chips — Calm, Mixed, or Crisis.
  2. You feel the buzz and see a badge confirm it (for example, "Mood: Calm").

The check-in syncs to your iPhone as a regulation entry at the level you chose. Logging at the same few moments each day — after school, after dinner, before bed — is where the patterns start to show. For more on what regulation check-ins are for, see Daily tracking.

4. Log a behavior, a potty change, a nap, or a dementia episode

Every row on the Log page works the same way as the feeding row: tap once, feel the buzz, and see the green checkmark confirm it. The rows sit in groups. Scroll down for the lower ones.

  • Behavior — Positive, Stim, or Spiral (an escalation).
  • Potty — Wet, BM, or Both.
  • Sleep — tap Start nap when a nap begins. The same row now reads End nap; tap it when they wake. CareHaven closes that one nap entry on your iPhone, with both times. If you close the Watch app in between, the Watch forgets the nap is running, so end it from your iPhone.
  • Dementia — Agitation, Sundowning, or Wandering. Tap More… for Aggression, Hallucination, Delusion, or Apathy. Each one files an episode at intensity 3 (Needed redirection) with no end time yet, because the wrist is no place for a slider. On your iPhone it shows under Needs follow-up in Main Menu -> Memory Care -> Behavior and Mood Changes; open it there to add the trigger, what helped, and when it ended. That row shows on its own for a person with a memory or thinking condition, and it can be turned on or off for one person; see Make it yours. For what to do with the follow-up, see What Helped.

5. Dictate a quick note

When something is worth remembering but you cannot stop to type, dictate it.

  1. On the Log page, scroll to the bottom, to the Note group, and tap Dictate.
  2. The Watch shows a Note button with a microphone. Tap it, and the Watch opens its built-in dictation screen.
  3. Speak your note — for example, "She had a great therapy session today."
  4. Tap Done.

You feel the buzz, a badge confirms "Logged note," and the note appears on your iPhone as a quick note. If you happened to say a name aloud, CareHaven scrubs the names it can recognize before the note is saved — best effort, the same way it handles names everywhere.

6. Glance at what's next

Swipe or turn the Crown to the Next page. Under Next up, it shows your next appointment: its title, the day, and the time. If nothing is coming up, it says "Calendar's open from here." To see your full schedule and add appointments, head to your iPhone; see Appointments & calendar.

When your phone isn't nearby

You do not have to wait for your phone to be in reach. Tap your logs as usual — the buzz and the badge confirm each one — and the Watch quietly holds them. As soon as your iPhone is back within range, everything you logged arrives in order, each with the time you actually tapped it. You will not lose a single entry, and nothing doubles up.

A note on the seizure timer

The built-in seizure timer — the stopwatch that warns you at five minutes to consider calling for help — runs on your iPhone today, where it also shows on your Lock Screen. A version that lives on the Watch is on the way as a fast-follow. Coming soon For now, start and run the seizure timer from your phone; see Walkthrough: Log a seizure with the timer.
