Screen time

Coming in Build 79 — not in TestFlight yet. This page describes a feature in the next build. Testers have Build 78 today, so you can't use this yet.

On this page

Screens are part of most days — a show while dinner cooks, a game on the drive home, a FaceTime with a grandparent, school work on a tablet. Screen time gives that a home in CareHaven so you can see how much there was, what it was, and how the hand-off went, without a lecture attached. It is a log, not a limit: nothing here counts down, warns, or grades you. Available

CareHaven doesn't count communication-device (AAC) time as screen time. A talker is their voice. That sentence sits inside the form. It is a request to you rather than something the app enforces — if your person uses a tablet as their AAC talker, leave that time out and log only the shows, games, and calls.

Where it lives

Tap: + (bottom right) → Screen time. In the default layout it comes right after Sleep; if you have rearranged the + menu, your order is kept and Screen time is added at the end.

Every session also lives in its own list: Main Menu (bottom left) → Track → Screen time. The row's subtitle shows today's total, or how many sessions you have on file, or Log the first session if there are none yet.

Logging a session that already happened

  1. + → Screen time.
  2. Under When, choose Already happened.
  3. Set Started and Ended, or set a Duration instead if you only know roughly how long it ran.
  4. Pick the kind: Watching (a show, a video, TV), Playing (a game or an app they drive), Video call (FaceTime, a call with family), Learning app (school work or a learning app), or Something else.
  5. Type a What if you like — Bluey, Minecraft, Grandma — and a note. Both are optional.
  6. Tap Save.

A brand-new entry does not ask how it ended. If that matters for this one, save it, then tap the session on Home or in the list to open Edit screen time, where the How did it end? question and the Gave a heads-up first switch appear.

Starting one now and ending it later

  1. + → Screen time, and under When leave Start now selected.
  2. Set a Planned length if you have one in mind — it is a note to yourself, not a timer, and nothing happens when it passes.
  3. Pick the kind, add a What if you like, and tap Save.

Home now shows the session with Still going under its kind. When the screen goes off, tap that row (or the session in the Track list — it reads Still going — started … · tap to end) to open End screen time. The end time starts out as now — adjust it if the screen actually went off earlier — then answer How did it end? — Went fine, Some pushback, or Hard stop — and flip Gave a heads-up first on if you warned them it was ending soon. Tap Save. Leaving How did it end? blank is fine; the session simply records no ending.

If one is already running. Start a second session while one started in the last day is still going, and CareHaven asks "[name] has a screen session still going. End it first?" — End it closes the first at this moment and saves the new one; Keep both saves both as they are.

If you forget to end one. After a day the row changes to a gentle Still going? This one started … Set an end time when you know it. When you open it, the end time is suggested as 30 minutes after the start rather than now, so one tap on Save cannot turn a forgotten session into a day-long one — but that suggestion is only a guess. Check it, change it to the time you know or your best estimate, then save. Until you end it, a session left open for more than a day counts nothing toward any day's total.

Where sessions show up

  • Home. Each session appears on the day it started, titled by its kind (Watching, Playing, and so on), with its start time and, once recorded, its end time. The day's summary pills include Screens with the day's total, shown only when there is something to count. A few counting rules worth knowing: two sessions that overlap both count in full (so Keep both can count the same minutes twice), a session that runs past midnight is split between the two days, and a still-going session older than a day counts nothing until you end it.
  • The Screen time list (Main Menu → Track → Screen time) groups sessions under Today, Yesterday, and then by date. Tap a finished session to edit it, tap a running one to end it, or swipe left to Delete. With nothing logged yet it reads: Log one from the + button when it happens — or don't. Quiet days are fine.
  • Search. Search & Ask CareHaven finds the Screen time list and the + entry, so you can jump there by typing screen. Individual sessions are not yet searchable by what was on. Your iPhone's own Spotlight search never sees screen sessions at all — what your person watched stays inside the app.

Backups and sharing

Screen sessions ride along in your encrypted backups. A backup that contains them needs Build 79 or later to restore — an older build does not know what a screen session is and cannot bring that backup in. If you share care with a co-caregiver, sessions travel inside the Today's Care section, the same one that carries feedings, sleep, and behavior logs.

What it is for

A week of sessions answers the questions that come up at a check-in or an IEP meeting — how much, what kind, and how did stopping go — with your own notes instead of a guess. Watching kind-by-kind is often more useful than the total: a long video call with family and a long game before bed are not the same thing, and a run of Hard stop endings after one particular app is worth knowing. Log what happens, or don't. Quiet days are fine.
